b. 550-554

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

3 arpeggio signs in FE (→EE)

No signs in GE

..

In the entire fragment (bars 550-556), GE is devoid of arpeggio marks, in spite of the fact that in FE (→EE) arpeggios are featured in 3 places – before the 1st chord in bar 550 and 553 and before the minim in bar 554. The excessive length of marks, which consist of six and not four parts, like the majority of arpeggios in the Concerto (e.g. in bars 570 and 572 placed on the same page in FE), seems to indicate the fact that the wavy lines were added in the last phase of proofreading of FE as the reason for the absence of marks in GE

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

No marking in FE (→GE,EE1)

Arpeggio sign in EE2 (→EE3)

Arpeggio sign suggested by the editors

..

In the main text, we add an arpeggio after bar 197. The indication was added also in EE2 (→EE3).

Small crotchet in FE

Acciaccatura in GE & EE

..

The grace note in the form of a small crotchet is most probably a mistake of FE – cf. bar 250. A similar conclusion was reached already by the revisers of GE and EE.

 in FE (→EE), contextual interpretation

No accidental in GE

..

In FE (→EE), the sharp is placed over the grupetto mark. The patent mistake was corrected in GE by removing the erroneous mark. In the main text, we move the  to under the grupetto, since c2 as the bottom note of the grupetto seems to be more natural than c2, and the intended mark  () having been misplaced is more likely than the erroneous one having been added in a place where it was totally absent.

Fifth in FE, literal reading

Only minim in GE

Appoggiatura & minim in EE

Acciaccatura – our alternative suggestion

..

The vague and most probably erroneous notation of FE was probably supposed to look like the one applied two bars later – a d2 minim preceded by an a2 grace note. We adopt this obvious interpretation in the main text; it was applied already in EE. In turn, the version of GE may be the original version, completed by Chopin in the last proofreading of FE. We give a short grace note as an acceptable variant – see bar 609.
