Four-bar slur in FE (→EE)

Slur in bars 643-644 in GE1 (→GE2)

Two-bar slurs in GE3

The visibly incomplete slurring of GE1 (→GE2) probably reflects one of the original versions of the slurs in FE, changed then in the last phase of proofreading. The slur added in GE3 constitutes a natural addition, in particular in the face of the authentic slurring of six previous bars.

In FE, one can see a trace of the original, shorter slur that encompassed only the last group of semiquavers.

FE (→EE, GE1 (→GE2) has a cautionary  before a before the 2nd chord in the L.H. It is a remaining element of the original notation of the 1st chord, in which there was an a instead of g (traces of a corresponding proofreading are clearly visible in FE). The accidental, unjustified in the final version, was removed in GE3. In GE1 (→GE2), cautionary naturals before c and c1, as well as before the c2 semiquaver, were added before that chord. We include all of them in the main text. A natural before c was added also in EE2 (→EE3), whereas in GE3 all accidentals before the 2nd chord were removed; only the  before c2 was left.

On the basis of the available sources, one cannot determine whether Chopin chose one version of the 1st note of bass, and if yes then which one. In FE (→GE,EE), there is an e-e1, left unchanged by Chopin in four out of five pupil's copies, including two that bear visible traces of this movement of the Concerto having been studied with Chopin (FED and FEH). However, in FEorch (→GEorch) cellos have an e1, and in FES, flats before the 1st chord are added, whose shape does not exclude Chopin's hand. Since both versions seem to be authentic, we choose to the main text the one that is presented by the principal source, i.e. FE.

In FE, the visible traces of corrections performed in print prove that this bar underwent a serious, probably multiple-stage, proofreading. However, we did not manage to decipher the original text, although some of the removed elements are quite clearly visible. The erroneous version of GE –  – probably corresponds to the penultimate stage of the changes introduced in FE. The final text is unquestionable – the version of FE is compliant with the chord in the orchestral part and must correspond to Chopin's intention, since it was proofread a few times. We consider the version resulting from the removal of the erroneous  from before the 1st chord, generally compliant with the text of the remaining sources, to be the edited text of GE1 (→GE2). GE3 introduced the same change; it also removed the superfluous  from before b1. None of GE contain cautionary naturals before a and a1, which are present in FE (→EE).
