Issues : Inaccurate slurs in A

b. 31

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

A probable interpretation of the slur from A

A different interpretation of the slur from A (→GEFEEE)

..

We present one of the possible interpretations of the slur unclearly notated in A. A different interpretation - albeit an equally plausible one - can be found in GE (→FEEE).

b. 32

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

A more probable interpretation of the slur written in A

A less probable interpretation of A (→GEFEEE)

The slur in A breaks off high above the notes; therefore, it is not clear where exactly Chopin intended it to end. We adopt the interpretation that is more natural in this context, both from the articulation and the phrasing point of view.

A possible interpretation of the slur of A

The slur in GE (→FEEE)

..

The extent of the slur in A is not quite clear if we take into account the notation of the 3rd quaver before it was deleted and changed (the slurs had probably been written before the correction was made). In the editions that slur was read "literally". We accept that as not in contradiction with the notation of A, and in any case most probably accepted by Chopin.

A slur over the dots in A

A longer slur in GE (→FEEE)

..

In our opinion, only the semiquaver triplet with dots (meaning portato.articulation in this context) is furnished with a slur  Cf. similar motifs in bars 11 and 15, and a remark related to the second slur in this bar.

In A,  the slur is drawn carelessly and it is not certain whether Chopin intended it to embrace the second d2-eor not. Neither are we sure whether the slur was supposed to end in that bar or at the beginning of the subsequent bar. This inaccurate slur ending was also reproduced in GE (→FEEE).

For the main text we adopt the most probable interpretation of the slur in A. The earlier beginning of that slur, as visible in the editions, may be treated as a variant.
