Issues : Long accents

b. 49

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

A long accent in A

A short accent in GE (→FEEE)

..

Reproduction of the notation of A in the editions is inaccurate in two aspects: Chopin's long accent was reproduced as a short one and the marks  and > were tied together, which may suggest the limited application of  only to the right hand.

A more probable interpretation of the accents in A

Accents in GE

Accents in  FE (→EE)

..

It is not clear whether the accent over b flat1 in A is a long or a short one. We tend to favour the latter option, contradictory to the manner in which it was interpreted in GE (→FEEE).

The second accent in that bar, under b flat2, is clearly a long one in A and in a sense also in GE, in which it has the form of a short diminuendo. In FE (→EE) nobody paid attention to the length of those signs and both accents were given as ordinary short ones.

Hairpins   in GE (→FEEE)

..

A long accent from A was interpreted in GE (→FEEE) as half-bar long hairpins  . The comparison with the analogous bar 56 resolves any possible doubts as to the meaning of that sign.

 The accent in GE (→FEEE)

..

The accent in A is not a typical long accent, yet this interpretation becomes much more probable if we take into account the analogous phrases of  the Nocturne and similar context in other works. The editions have a short accent here..

b. 57

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

A long accent in A (→GE)

A short accent in  FE (→EE)

..

A long accent from A (→GE) was reproduced in FE (→EE) as a short one. This is certainly the engraver's inaccuracy.
