No marks in AI

AI has no accents for g1 in bars 1, 3 & 7 (a similar situation appears in bar 25, 27 & 31). The discussed bars are among few places in which Chopin's long accents are reproduced quite precisely in GE (→FEEE).

Possible long accents in A

Possible short accents in A (→FEGE,EE)

..

Determining which type of accents Chopin had in mind at the time of writing A is not an easy task. The marks have different length, yet it is rather a result of a hasty notation than the will to differentiate them. According to us, this fact supports the decision to consider them as short accents, being the most natural solution in this context. This is how they were reproduced in FE (→GE,EE). Due to the described doubts, we also give long accents as a possible interpretation of A.

Accent in FE (→GE,EE)

..

In A the first long note of the theme, g1, is provided with an accent in both bar 1 and 9 (as well as in bar 41). In FE (→GE,EE) the sign appears only in bar 9, which we consider as an oversight. The accent's type in bar 1 is ambiguous, yet the sign in bar 9 is undoubtedly a long accent and this is the version we adopt in the main text in both places.

Long accent in AI

  in A (→GE1GE1a)

  in FE

  in EE

  in GE2 (→GE3)

..

The long accent under f2 at the beginning of bar 2 in #AW is the original concept of dynamic markings in these bars. In A one can see that Chopin rejected the accent (placed above this note) in favour of a pair of   hairpins. The hairpins were incorrectly reproduced in GE1 (→GE1a), yet only the fact of beginning diminuendo in GE2 (→GE3) from the beginning of bar 2 may be considered as a quite significant change. In FE and EE, diminuendo immediately follows crescendo. In the main text we reproduce the signs of A, the only ones written undoubtedly by Chopin's hand.
