Issues : Errors in FE

b. 97

composition: Op. 22, Polonaise

..

In FE (→EE) the 1st rest in the parts of both hands is a demisemiquaver, which is a mistake (it is likely that the beginning of this bar was confused with the previous one). The mistake was corrected in GE.

Quaver in GEEE2 & FED

Quaver & crotchet d, our alternative suggestion

..

The fact that the version of FE (→EE1) is erroneous is proven by:

  • missing resolution of the eseventh of the ninth chord without prime (from the previous bar) in the piano part, natural in this context;
  • correction of this note to in FED;
  • in the cellos part – situations in which the orchestra part implements a different bass note than the one resulting from the piano part, very rare in Chopin's oeuvre, are generally absent in the Polonaise;

The change of this note to was introduced in GE and – probably on the basis thereof – in EE2.

The issue concerning the extension of this note – see the note above.

FE (→GE) are lacking in the  restoring f2 on the 11th small note and in the  restoring b1 on the last one. EE corrected only the latter; in turn, two cautionary accidentals were added –  before e2 (5th quaver) and  before g2 (10th quaver).

There is no  lowering G to G at the beginning of the bar in FE (→EE1). This mistake, if committed by Chopin, would prove his anticipatory thinking – modulation to the key of B minor/G major was already determined in the previous bar, hence the use of G could have already been considered obvious (in FE the spaces between the notes suggest that the  before g and maybe even all 3 L.H. flats were added at the time of proofreading). The accidental was added in the remaining editions.
