Long accent in A

 in GE1

 in FE (→EE)

 in GE2

..

In the main text we give the long accent written in A as the only undoubtedly authentic sign. The  hairpin in GE1, perhaps added by Chopin, can be considered to be a potentially authentic, equal variant. The versions of the remaining editions are most probably a result of inaccuracies – as in the case of FE (→EE) – or revisions (GE2).

2 long accents in A

Short accent on 6th quaver of bar in GE

Long accent on 5th quaver in FE

Short accent on 5th quaver in EE

..

The first out of two long accents, written in this bar in A, was overlooked in the editions, probably due to lack of space resulting from the placement of the Tutti indication between the staves in GE1. The second, excluding accidental changes of long accents to short ones and vice versa, was placed in GE (→FEEE) in the middle between the staves (and not directly over the crotchet in the L.H.) and in FE (→EE), in addition, it was erroneously moved a quaver earlier.

f1 in A (→GE)

a-f1 in FE (→EE), contextual interpretation

..

The addition of a in the proofreading of FE (→EE) is undoubtedly a Chopin improvement (it can be that Chopin corrected his own oversight in A). There is no extending dot next to this note, which, regardless of the reason, has to be considered an inaccuracy in this context.

Slurs in A, contextual interpretation

Slurs in GE

Slurs in FE (→EE)

..

In A the slur under the motif in the R.H. ends on a, whereas the corresponding slur in the L.H. – on B. A comparison with the slurs in the next bar allows to consider the first of them to be inaccurate. The slurs in GE can be a result of Chopin's proofreading, since leading the slurs to the end of the motifs is more natural here – cf. the authentic slurs e.g. in bars 4-6. In turn, an earlier beginning of the slurs in FE (→EE), being contrary to the structure of the motifs, cannot come from Chopin and is probably a result of an erroneous interpretation of the slurs of GE.
