Issues : Errors in GE

b. 321

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

..

In A (→GE) there are no accidentals in the last group of semiquavers. In the proofreading of FE (→EE) two flats were added, probably indicated by Chopin, a cautionary before A and a necessary one before G.

Slur in A, literal reading

Slur in A (contextual interpretation) & GE2

No slur in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

In A bar 325 is the last one on the page. The slur in the L.H. clearly suggests a continuation (similarly as the slur in the R.H.), which, however, is absent on a new page (in bar 326). In GE1 (→FEEE) the slur was completely overlooked, whereas in GE2 the slur of A together with the overlooked ending was restored. Since this is how Chopin's intention undoubtedly looked like, in this case in the main text we include the slur of GE2.

Continued slur in A

New slur in GE

No slur in FE

New slur in EE

..

The division of the slur in GE (→FE), as a result of which the 2nd half in bar 328 is not embraced with a slur at all, is undoubtedly a mistake of the engraver of GE1. The version of FE – without a slur in bar 329 – can be interpreted as an oversight of FE or as a notation of the state of GE1 from before the final retouch. In the second case, the slur of GE1 in bar 329 would be an inaccurate attempt to alleviate the consequences of omission of the final one-and-a-half-bar fragment of the slur. A suitable completion of the slur, this time accurate, was introduced in EE. See also the note on the slur in the L.H.

b. 335

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

..

The trilled note in A is an erroneous c2. A similar mistake, consisting in writing the upper second of the trilled note instead of the trilled note, while the performance of the trill begins from the upper second, was committed by Chopin also in the Bolero, Op. 19, bar 187 and in the Sonata in B minor, 3rd mov., bar 20. In GE1 (→FEEE) the error was corrected, probably by Chopin, whereas GE2 returned to the erroneous text of A. See also the note in the next bar.

In the main text we add a cautionary  before b1.

c2 in A & GE2

b1 in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

According to us, the version of GE1 (→FEEE) is a result of a misunderstanding of the sense of the proofreading in the previous bar. The engraver probably considered the ccrotchet to be related to the trill and constituting its ending. Since in the proofreading a change of the trilled note was marked, he assumed that the crotchet is also to be corrected.
