Slurs

b. 85

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

2 slurs in sources

1 slur suggested by the editors

..

The divided slur in the sources is, according to us, a result of an inaccurately drawn extension of the slur in A. Initially, the slurs embraced only the irregular groups on the 4th crotchet in bar 84 and in the 2nd half of bar 85. Chopin then extended the first of the slurs, but he did not drag him to the beginning of the second one. In an analogous situation in bars 92-93, A combined the slurs in an unquestionable way. (Cf. also continuous slurs in bars 83 and 91).

b. 87-88

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Slurs from 2nd quaver in A & GE2

Slurs from 1st quaver in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

The half-bar slurs of GE1 (→FEEE) are a typical example of schematic thinking of the engraver of GE1. Accurately marked slurs of A were restored in GE2. See also the note at the beginning of the bar.

b. 88-89

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

..

The first slur in the R.H. would reach in this bar to the very beginning of the next one, which was clearly crossed out by Chopin in A. The slurs of GE (→FEEE), eventually compliant with the corrected slurs of A, were initially different – there was no division of the slur in bar 88 – which is indicated by visible traces of corrections.

b. 93

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

1 slur in A

2 slurs in GE (→FE)

2 slurs in EE

..

In spite of a clear combination of original slurs in A, put over irregular groups, in GE (→FEEE) the slur is divided more or less in the middle of the bar (in EE the beginning of the second slur was moved, with a reason in this situation).

b. 93

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Slurs separated over rest in A & GE2

Slurs separated over bar line in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

Same as in analogous bar 85, leading the slur to the end of bar 93 is a characteristic inaccuracy of GE1, which, in this case, included also the beginning of the next bar. Inconsistency with A is even more striking, since Chopin modified both slurs in the manuscript and the result of the corrections does not raise any doubt.
