Slurs
b. 59

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

The slur of A is not absolutely unambiguous, yet its interpretation in GE1 (→FE→EE) is certainly erroneous. The slur in GE2 may be considered an acceptable interpretation; however, in the main text we assume that in A each of six slurs in bars 59-62 embraces a motif made of four semiquavers and a crotchet. The slur of GE (→FE) is probably a result of a schematic interpretation of the notation of A, although from the musical point of view, it is absolutely possible. A shortened slur in EE is certainly an arbitrary revision. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , Inaccuracies in GE |

The slur, started in A in bar 63, the last on the page, was not finished on a new page. According to us, one should assume that Chopin's intention was to write in the part of the L.H. a slur of the same range as in the complete slur of the R.H. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: Inaccurate slurs in A , GE revisions , Errors of A |

In GE1 and in the remaining editions, the slur starts – contrary to A – only from the 1st semiquaver. The reason for this inaccuracy were most probably difficulties of a graphic character: moving the beginning of the slur facilitates a legible placement of all elements of notation accumulated in this space (inscriptions, an octave sign, a phrase mark, a tie, notes over the stave). Both notations are practically equal, hence we do not consider the difference to be an actual variant. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in GE |
