b. 217

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Beginning of slur in A, contextual interpretation

Beginning of slur in GE (→FEEE

..

The beginning of the slur of A is undoubtedly inaccurate; however, it is unclear from which note it was supposed to start, according to Chopin – from the 2nd fsemiquaver, from the sustained esemiquaver or maybe even from the ecrotchet, as it was interpreted in GE (→FEEE). We adopt the second of the possibilities as the text of A due to a slightly similar situation in the previous bar. Being uncertain how A is to be interpreted, in the main text we give the unambiguous notation of the editions (equivalent to the one we adopted to A).

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

 &  in A

 in GE1 (→FE)

> in EE & GE2

..

We give the  indication exactly after A. It indicates, together with the slur embracing the octave leap, that the variant of the initial motif of this movement of the Concerto should be played distinctly. The detail was inaccurately reproduced in the editions. Similarly in bar 220.

In EE and GE2 the accent was reproduced as short. See the previous note.

No indication in A (→GE)

sempre legato in FE (→EE)

..

Chopin added the sempre legato indication in the proofreading of FE1 (→FE2EE). It certainly concerns the L.H., which is devoid of slurs from that place on. While writing A, Chopin would perhaps think that the slur in bar 217 would be enough (as an example to follow in subsequent figures); however, upon seeing this place during the proofreading of FE1, he considered a clearer indication of the performance manner to be necessary – this is most probably the so-called harmonic legato, i.e. holding elements of a chord with fingers, which is partially written with rhythmic values.

e2 in A (→GEFE)

e2 in EE

..

The addition introduced in EE, most probably due to e in the L.H., is, however, certainly erroneous: raising the bottom note in a roulade, independently from the chord being its harmonic background, is rather a rule than an exception.
