b. 157-158

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

2 slurs in GC (literal reading →GE)

Slur in FE

Slur in GC (contextual interpretation) & in EE

..

Taking into account the versions of FE and GC, one may assume that the slur of GC at the end of b. 157 could have been added by Chopin. The aim of that change was undoubtedly a slur encompassing the entire three-quaver motif (as it is 4 bars earlier), which was guessed in EE (the correction could have even been introduced by Chopin in the Stichvorlage for EE). GE reproduced the notation of GC literally, i.e. as coinciding slurs.

Slur up to f in GC

Slur up to B in FE (→EE)

Slur below notes in GE

..

In the main text we reproduce the little slur running from the grace note in the version of GC, in this case probably closest to [A]. The little slur can be, according to us, interpreted as a conventional sign, by playing the grace note and the fifth, or as a B1-B-f arpeggio. The notation of FE (→EE) is most probably inaccurate (cf. the adjacent note), whereas of GE – routinely revised; at the same time, both eliminate the possibility of a double interpretation.

Slurs suggested by the editors

..

A comparison with FE, which is also based on [A], suggests that the earlier division of the slur in GC (→GE) is erroneous. The copyist's momentary distraction is also supported by the misplaced  hairpin, one bar too early (see the previous note). Irrespective of the position of the division, we consider the interpretation of the sources that reproduced it as coinciding slurs to be inaccurate; in the main text we interpret the first slur as a tenuto-slur and end it still in b. 176. It corresponds to the notation of GC as well as to the slurs of FE in an analogous phrase 4 bars ago.

b. 197

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

..

In GC (→GE) and FE there is no  raising to f. The patent inaccuracy was corrected in EE, which, in spite of the fact that the base text to EE was corrected by Chopin, could have been performed by the reviser.

b. 218

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

..

The notation of accidentals in the penultimate chord in the R.H. in bar 218 is inaccurate in the sources. The  raising e2 to e2 is absent in all sources, whereas the  raising g2 to g2 is present only in GE and EE.
