b. 40

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

Slur in GC (→GE) & EE2

No slur in FE (→EE1)

..

In the main text we do not give the slur of GC, as the slur of the R.H. – with a different range – is valid in this context also in the L.H.

b. 41

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

Arpeggio sign & grace note in GC

No ornaments in FE (→EE1)

Grace note with slur in GE

Grace note with slur in EE2

Our variant suggestion

..

There is no reason to doubt the authenticity of the arpeggio and grace note in GC (the arpeggio is written as a slur, which, at this stage of life, was already a frequent way of writing this ornament by Chopin and this is how it was reproduced in GE). On the other hand, the version of FE, devoid of these elements, was not completed by Chopin neither in the proofreadings of FE nor in the base text to EE, which can prove its acceptance by the composer. Therefore, in the main text we suggest a variant solution.

b. 41-42

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

d tied in GC (→GE) & EE2

d repeated in FE (→EE1)

Our variant suggestion

..

It is hard to determine which was Chopin's final intention, as far as the sustention of d is concerned. The tie in GC could have been added by Chopin, yet it is also likely that it was in [A] but it was overlooked by the engraver of FE (→EE1). On the other hand, Chopin did not add it either in the proofreadings of FE3 and FE4 or in any of the pupil's copies. Due to the above reasons, in the main text we suggest a variant solution.

b. 41

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

..

The chord filling this bar has an erroneous value of a minim in GC. It may prove the copyist's having confused bars 41 and 42. The mistake was corrected already in GE1.

b. 43-46

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

Two  in GC (→GE)

No signs in FE (→EE1)

 in bar 46 in EE2

..

The  signs in bars 43-44 and 46 were probably added in GC (→GE) by Chopin. The latter was added later also in EE2.
