Issues : Authentic corrections of EE
b. 148
|
composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II
..
The inaccurately vertically written notes result in GC not being entirely clear where the slur over the part of the R.H. is supposed to reach – the 2nd or the 3rd beat of the bar. In the main text we adopt the first possibility, in which the relation to the progression of the bottom voice is more significant. In the editions it was interpreted differently, which is also justified, particularly if we take into account the tenuto slur, added by Chopin in the proofreading of FE3 in bar 146. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources |

The slur of GC (→GE) includes only this part of the five-bar-long melodic passage whose performance Chopin assigned to the left hand. It is certainly an inaccuracy, perhaps repeated after [A] (the original version?). In turn, a respective slur in FE is broken at the end of the text's line and most probably it was supposed to be led to the end of the phrase (Chopin could have extended it in [A] already after having prepared GC). There is no doubt it is necessary to embrace the entire passage with a slur, if we take into consideration the authentic slurring of analogous phrases. Both possibilities of starting the slur – from the first or second beat of bar 164 – can be considered to be equal. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in FE , GE revisions , Inaccuracies in GC , Authentic corrections of EE |

The version with d1 (=e1) is probably erroneous – situations in which there is no sign, cancelling the previous alteration, belong to the most frequently encountered inaccuracies of Chopin's notation. Moreover, it is likely that the composer rectified his mistake, while correcting the base text to EE. Adding a cautionary before c1 is a poorly justified revision of GE2. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: Errors in FE , Omissions to cancel alteration , Errors in GE , GE revisions , Errors of GC , Authentic corrections of EE |

As in bar 28, in the main text we give the notation in GC (→GE) which raises no reservations. The lack of accents in FE is certainly a mistake, and the mark in EE – most probably a long accent – a complement likely by Chopin. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: Long accents , Errors in FE , Authentic corrections of EE |
