Slur over L.H. in GC (→GE)

Unfinished slur in FE

Slur from 2nd beat in EE

Completion of slur in FE suggested by the editors

..

The slur of GC (→GE) includes only this part of the five-bar-long melodic passage whose performance Chopin assigned to the left hand. It is certainly an inaccuracy, perhaps repeated after [A] (the original version?). In turn, a respective slur in FE is broken at the end of the text's line and most probably it was supposed to be led to the end of the phrase (Chopin could have extended it in [A] already after having prepared GC). There is no doubt it is necessary to embrace the entire passage with a slur, if we take into consideration the authentic slurring of analogous phrases. Both possibilities of starting the slur – from the first or second beat of bar 164 – can be considered to be equal.

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

In GC and FE1 (→FE2FE3) there is no  before the top most note of the 3rd crotchet in the R.H. The patent inaccuracy was corrected in GE, EE and FE4. In all sources a  was unnecessarily repeated before g1 in the chord in the L.H.

Pedalling in GC (literal reading) & GE2

Pedalling in GC (possible interpretation→GE1)

Another interpretation of GC suggested by the editors

Pedalling in FE (→EE)

..

It is not certain who interpreted Chopin's intention in [A] more accurately – the copyist in GC (→GE) or the engraver of FE (→EE). According to us, an earlier change of pedal in FE seems to be less likely. The notation of GC may be interpreted in three ways, out of which the literal interpretation, adopted in GE2, is dubious from the pianistic point of view. The remaining two – given in GE1 and our main text – are natural from the pianistic point of view and can be considered to be equal.

Indications in GC & GE2

Only dim. in GE1

Indications in FE (→EE)

..

In the main text, we give dim. indication already in bar 266, according to GC (→GE). Its later occurrence in FE (→EE) could have been due to the new line starting at bar 267. The lack of the later indications – rallentando and lento – is certainly a result of engraver's oversight.
