b. 2-5

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt III

..

In GC bar 2 (the entire bar except for the slur) and bar 5 (part of the L.H.) are written in an abbreviated manner with a /sign. The notation is certainly repeated after [A]. Similar abbreviations appear also in bar 8 and 12-13.

b. 3

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt III

..

GC (→GE1) includes an erroneous instead of G in the last chord in the L.H. The unquestionable in this context mistake was corrected in GE2mar (→GE2). Similarly in bar 57.

No grace note in GC (→GE)

Grace note in FE (→EE)

Our variant suggestion

..

It is not clear whether Chopin wanted to have a grace note already in this bar – it appears without any doubts in bars 10, 22, 30 and analog. The ornament was deleted – most probably by Chopin – in GC, yet it remained in FE despite a few corrections and visible traces of development in pupil's copies. Due to these reasons, in the main text we suggest a variant solution.

b. 5

Crotchet b in GC (→GE)

Quaver in FE

Dotted quaver in EE

..

Adding in FE the b note on the 2nd beat of the bar to the top voice is probably a result of misunderstanding of the notation of [A]. The different value of the b note in bar 59, being a repetition of this bar, not written out with notes in the manuscripts, indicates an inaccuracy of reproduction of the manuscript in this place by the engraver of FE. Unifying the rhythmic values in EE is most probably a revision, supported by a comparison with bar 59. In the main text we give the unquestionable version of GC (→GE).

b. 7-8

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt III

Dotted rhythm in GC (→GE)

Quavers in FE (→EE)

..

It is hard to state how the difference in the rhythm on the 1st beat of the bar occurred. The dotted rhythm in GC (→GE) seems to be a mistake of the copyist – the text is written uniformly, moreover, only bar 7 is written out with notes, as a result of which one, possible, mistake could have contributed to the change of the rhythm in both bars. On the other hand, Chopin's proofreading cannot be entirely excluded (a similar situation appears in Allegro de Concert, Op. 46, bar 17). In this situation, in the main text we give the version of FE (→EE), compatible with the unquestionable rhythm of analogous bars 11-12. Rhythmic variants of this type are to be found in numerous works by Chopin.
