Pedalling

b. 168

composition: Op. 64 No 2, Waltz in C♯ minor

Pedalling in A, EEC, EEW2, GE2op (→GE3op) & #GE3no2

No markings in FE (→GE1op,GE1no2,EEW1)

..

The absence of pedalling in this bar is undoubtedly a mistake of the engraver of FE (→GE1op,GE1no2,EEW1). At the last appearance of this section, more mistakes in reproduction of the pedalling were committed in FE, which may be related to the necessity of working on two pages of the manuscript at the same time (cf. bars 173-174 and 188).

b. 173-174

composition: Op. 64 No 2, Waltz in C♯ minor

 in bar 174 in A, GE2op (→GE3op) & GE2no2

in bar 173 in FE (→EE,GE1op,GE1no2)

..

The discrepancy in the placement of the  sign between A and FE is, according to us, a result of a mistake at combining the written out bars with their numerated repetitions – the shorter pedal of FE is compatible with the authentic pedalling in bars 189-190. In the main text, we stick to the version of A. The changes in later GE were introduced most probably by analogy to bars 45-46 and 109-110 (see also bars 189-190).

b. 188

composition: Op. 64 No 2, Waltz in C♯ minor

Pedalling in A, EEW2, GE2op (→GE3op) & GE2no2

No markings in FE (→GE1op,GE1no2,EEC,EEW1)

..

The absence of pedalling in a part of the editions is undoubtedly a consequence of an oversight of the engraver of FE.

b. 189-190

composition: Op. 64 No 2, Waltz in C♯ minor

One-bar pedal in A (→FEGE1op,GE1no2,EE)

Two-bar pedal in GE2op (→GE3op) & GE2no2

..

Similarly as in bars 61-62, in later GE the pedalling in bars 189-190 was changed after bars 45-46.

b. 192

composition: Op. 64 No 2, Waltz in C♯ minor

 before rest in A

 under rest in FE (→EE)

 after rest in GE1op (→GE2opGE3op) & GE2no2)

No pedalling in GE1no2

..

We give the moment of the pedal's release in the main text after A. Minor shifts of  in the editions, particularly in GE, may suggest, taking into account the context, i.e. the end of the piece, a longer dying out of the sound, probably contrary to the intention of Chopin. The absence of indications in GE1no2 is undoubtedly an oversight.
