b. 66-67

composition: Op. 64 No 1, Waltz in D♭ major

Pedalling in AI, contextual interpretation

Pedalling in AI, alternative interpretation

No markings in remaining sources

Chopin's indicating the pedalling in AI in bar 66 is undoubtedly related to the fact of playing the bass note on the 1st beat of the bar, present in this autograph, which makes the figure of the accompaniment in this bar to be closely analogous to the previous ones. However, the  sign in bar 67 poses a mystery, as it is difficult to indicate a possible scenario leading to the creation of this mistake. Therefore, we suggest both possibilities of correcting the notation, giving priority to the one in which we consider the notation to be unfinished.

In this bar the accompaniment evolved through a few versions. Chopin started from the version of AIII, written in As as the first one. The next one was probably the second entirely different version of As (see bars 62-69), rejected – deleted – still at the stage of writing the sketch. In AI and AII two versions were tested, already very close to the one that was finally accepted in A and editions.

According to us, both authentic slurrings offer attractive interpretation possibilities of this transition.

b. 69-94

composition: Op. 64 No 1, Waltz in D♭ major

..

In the previous autographs the reprise is marked in an abbreviated manner with Dal Segno or Dal Segno al fine (in As the return is indicated only with segno). At the same time, Chopin put it in different places, as both the eight-bar link (bars 69-76) and the beginning of the reprise have a different form in various sources:

  • in As there is no link at all, although the reprise begins with a trill in bars 77-78; the return leads to bar 3;
  • in AI the notation ends only in bar 80, after which one returns to bar 9;
  • in AII and AIII after bar 76 one returns to bar 5.

Due to the reasons discussed in the characterization of As, we write out the reprise in this autograph until the end of the text of this source in bar 108.

composition: Op. 64 No 1, Waltz in D♭ major

Four  with ties in AI & GE

Four  with ties in A (→FEEE)

..

In the main text we give the notation of the trills after A (→FEEE; wavy lines in GE are – despite their compatibility with AI – most probably an arbitrary addition). One could have doubts concerning the fact of marking the four times repeated  sign, however, a comparison with the notation of the remaining autographs suggests that all mean the same: a continuous trill throughout four bars.
In As after bar 68 a counterpart of bar 77 follows.
