Pedalling

b. 19-20

composition: Op. 25 No 8, Etude in D♭ major

No sign in A

 in FE

 in EE

 in GE

..

Lack of the  sign in A, intended or not, is symptomatic – Chopin did not want to precise the moment of the pedal's release or he was uncertain how to mark it (cf. the Prelude in C minor, Op. 45, bars 5-6 and analog.). The composer could have meant a gradual release of pedal, which was impossible to write adequately with the help of the adopted system of signs. In this situation, the signs in FE and EE, although undoubtedly authentic, are probably to be considered as an approximate proposal.
The sign added in GE is certainly non-authentic.

b. 24-25

composition: Op. 25 No 8, Etude in D♭ major

Pedal sustained in A (→GE) & EE1

Pedal change in FE & EE2 (→EE3)

..

The change of pedal marked only in FE is opposed to the harmonic pedalling prevailing in this Etude and generally used by Chopin. Assuming an unidentified misunderstanding, to the main text we adopt the version of A (→GE) and EE1 (the later EE repeat the notation of FE), in which the entire spread chord resounds on pedal.

b. 25

composition: Op. 25 No 8, Etude in D♭ major

 in A (→GE)

 in FE & EE2 (→EE3)

..

The earlier pedal release, marked in A (→GE) and still earlier – in EE1, are written in the sources transferring the original version of the bass motif in bars 25-26 (with single notes). Relation of pedalling with the sound of the bass progression seems to be quite likely, hence in the main text we give  at the end of the bar, in accordance with FE, in which Chopin introduced an improved version of the bass.

No sign in A

Our variant suggestion

..

Same as in bars 19-20, in A there is no  asterisk. In this kind of context, indicating the clear place of the pedal's release poses certain problems, as obtaining the correct sound effect requires a gradual pedal's release. In the main text we suggest the signs given in FE and EE in a variant form, as being probably authentic.
