The traces, visible in FC in the part of the L.H., show that the copyist initially wrote here the chords from bar 31, which, after having noticed his error, he erased and replaced with the correct ones. category imprint: Corrections & alterations; Source & stylistic information issues: Errors of FC |

composition: Op. 25 No 5, Etude in E minor

In the main text we give the notation modelled on FE as most probably the latest and most consistent – the accents, minims and pedalling specify the way of performance accordingly. The remaining sources prove that Chopin tried to mark the possibility of separating the tenor voice in different ways. In the version of EE it is the original form of the 1st chord (with a), mistake in pedalling and placing accents on the wrong side that draw the attention. The notation of FC is inconsistent (an accent over f1, separate stem for e1) and incomplete (no pedalling). In GE it was distorted even more – e1 is not separated, whereas GE1 overlooked the accent. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: Long accents , Inaccuracies in GE , Errors in EE , GE revisions , Authentic corrections of FE |

composition: Op. 25 No 5, Etude in E minor

In the main text, we give the most accurate pedalling of FE, probably added in the proofreading of this edition. At the end of bar 36, we add the sign, which did not fit into FE due to the very dense layout of the text on the page. The indications of EE are certainly inaccurate, although it is hard to state how it occurred. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in FE , EE inaccuracies |

Although Chopin at a certain stage – while correcting the base text to EE – most probably considered the version with f to be better, in the main text we leave the version with E, present in FE and FC (→GE). The version was introduced – most probably on the basis of FE – also in EE2 (→EE3). category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: EE revisions |
