Issues : Inaccuracies in FE

b. 35-36

composition: Op. 25 No 5, Etude in E minor

No pedalling in FC (→GE)

Pedalling in FE, contextual interpretation

Pedalling in EE

..

In the main text, we give the most accurate pedalling of FE, probably added in the proofreading of this edition. At the end of bar 36, we add the  sign, which did not fit into FE due to the very dense layout of the text on the page. The indications of EE are certainly inaccurate, although it is hard to state how it occurred.

2 slurs in FC (→GE)

5 slurs in FE

1 slur in EE

..

Lack of visible traces of corrections in the sources impedes to determine how the differences in the slurring of this four-bar section occurred. However, most probably all three ways of slurring are authentic:

  • the slurs of FE correspond to the positions of the hand on the keyboard and they are compatible with the slurring of the pair of chords in the L.H., articulating the shortest expressively important motifs;
  • the slurs of FC and EE determine the musical wholes – two- or four-bar respectively – in a broader time perspective.

In the main text, we give the slurring of the base source, i.e. FE.

b. 92

composition: Op. 25 No 5, Etude in E minor

..

In FC and FE there is no  raising b to b in the 2nd half of the bar. This patent inaccuracy was corrected in GE and most probably in EE, as the defect was present probably in all Stichvorlage manuscripts. The sharp added in FE2 before the 11th semiquaver was probably an attempt to correct this inaccuracy, a doubly failed attempt – the sign was added three semiquavers too late and at a wrong pitch.

Probable interpretation of slur in FC

Slurs in FE (contextual interpretation) & GE2 (→GE3)

Grace-note slur in EE & GE1

..

Interpretation of the slurs of the L.H. in FC poses a significant challenge due to the  sign written over the slurs. According to us, it is more likely that the slurs are supposed to create one sign. The slurs of FE and GE2 (→GE3) can be considered an alternative interpretation of the notation of FC. The version of GE1 is certainly erroneous; the one of EE probably too.
