Slurs

b. 9-16

composition: Op. 10 No 9, Etude in F minor

Slurs for 5 & half bars in AI

No slurs in A (→FEGE,EE3)

Slurs in 8 bars in EE4

..

The slurs in these bars – despite being justified from the point of view of the performance – do not appear in the sources controlled by Chopin in terms of publication (A, FE). We do not include them in the main text.

b. 10-12

composition: Op. 10 No 9, Etude in F minor

Slur in AI

A (→FEGE,EE)

..

The shorter slur of AI (written in bars 3-4) certainly does not reflect Chopin's complete intention in terms of slurring. We give the unambiguous slur of A (→FEGE,EE).

b. 14-16

composition: Op. 10 No 9, Etude in F minor

Slur in AI

FE (→GE,EE)

..

The slur of A gradually fades due to the ending ink, hence it is uncertain where it was supposed to end, according to Chopin. The short slur of AI is probably fragmented (cf. bars 2-4). In the main text, we give the unambiguous slur of FE (→GE,EE), which could have been proofread by Chopin.

b. 17-20

composition: Op. 10 No 9, Etude in F minor

No slur in AI

Slur in A (→FEGE,EE)

..

The slur of A (→FEGE,EE), beginning in the 2nd bar of a new phrase, was completed by Chopin in FED. We consider this addition as an improvement of notation and adopt it to the main text.

b. 29

composition: Op. 10 No 9, Etude in F minor

No markings in AI & A

Slurs & dots in FE (→GE,EE)

..

In bar 29 Chopin repeated in A the simplified notation of AI, which in the light of the more accurate notation of the next bars must be considered as an oversight. While proofreading FE (→GE,EE), the composer added the slurs and dots.
