Slur in A (→FEGE,EE)

FED

It may be wondered why Chopin embraced the phrase with a slur only from the 2nd bar in A (→FEGE,EE). It may have been connected with other changes of this phrase's character, which were supposedly performed during the works on A. In the previous autograph (AI), the slur is not marked at all, while both crotchets in bar 18 are provided with accents. By replacing the accents with the indication cresc., Chopin wanted, as it seems, to give the phrase more clearly oriented and smoother flow, which he underlined with a slur. In this situation, the slur added in FED may be considered as a further improvement of notation, clearly showing a complete phrase.
