b. 21

composition: Op. 10 No 6, Etude in E♭ minor

Semiquaver e1 in A

Crotchet in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The fact of placing e1 on the upper stem in the editions extended its rhythmic value to a crotchet, which runs counter to the logic of voice-leading.

b. 22

composition: Op. 10 No 6, Etude in E♭ minor

..

In the part of the L.H. A has two crotchets and a quaver, hence the bar has only five quavers. On the basis of the alignment of the notes to the R.H., it turns out that Chopin most probably overlooked the dots extending the first octave. The dots were added in a proofing of FE (→GE,EE).

b. 22

composition: Op. 10 No 6, Etude in E♭ minor

A & EE2 (→EE3)

GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5) & EE4

..

The dots extending the e1-fsecond are not distinctly copied in FE, so in fact only the lower one is visible (perhaps some corrections were performed there). In GE they were completely omitted and from GE2 on, the upper voice was completed with a quaver rest at the end of the bar. The latter was introduced also in EE4

Our alternative suggestion

..

It is not clear at all if by leaving the 2nd half of the bar not entirely completed with rhythmic values in the upper voice, Chopin forgot about the dots extending the b1-dthird, as it was interpreted in FE (→GE,EE). Perhaps he planned to complete the bar with a rest, as in bar 26 (the scope of the figuration did not have to be the only reason for using a rest). We consider this possibility as an alternative solution.

b. 38

composition: Op. 10 No 6, Etude in E♭ minor

Crotchet in A (→FEGE1)

Dotted crotchet in EE

Crotchet & rest in GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5)

..

In A (→FEGE1) the rhythmic values of the upper voice do not fill the 2nd half of the bar, as the d1-f1 third is a common crotchet. According to us, an oversight of the dots extending the crotchet are more likely in this situation. This is how it was interpreted in EE, adding the dots. In subsequent GE,s a quaver rest was added.
