EE3 - Corrected impression of [EE2]

Publisher: Wessel & Co.
Date: 1835-1836
Title: Douze Grandes Etudes || No. XI
Dedication: ses amis J. Liszt et Ferd. Hiller

In the first English edition the entire Opus 10 is divided into two books, six Etudes each, while the presented copy belongs to the earliest known impression of the second book. In spite of this, we assign it the EE3 symbol, as on the basis of the comparison with the sources of the first book, it may be assumed that there had been two earlier impressions which we mark as [EE1] and [EE2] (see the Etude in C major, No. 7).

EE3 reproduces the text of FE1, in which a number of errors (e.g., all mistakes mentioned in the characteristics of FE1) and inaccuracies was corrected, e.g., arpeggios in bars 9 and 46 were added, pedal marks in bars 25, 53 and 54, accidentals were completed, e.g., a  before g in bar 18, a  before e3 in bar 49, yet also the erroneous  in bar 31 was removed. The most significant arbitrary interventions are the changes of d1 to c1 in bar 25f1 to f1 in bar 30.

In certain situations it is uncertain whether the difference between FE and EE is a result of an error or a revision, e.g., shift of  in bars 4 and 12, as well as in bar 50.

In accordance with the information on the title page – "edited with additional fingering by his pupil, I. Fontana" – three Chopin's digits in bar 9 were completed with several dozens of subsequent ones in EE3 in bars 1-3, 33, 37 and 45.

EE3 was renewed on a number of occasions with different cover pages – see the Etude in C major, No. 7.
