Issues : Inaccuracies in GE

b. 4-12

composition: Op. 10 No 11, Etude in E♭ major

..

In A in bar 4 (and bar 12, which repeats this bar) the  hairpins embrace with their range the 2nd and 3rd chords in the bar. This is how it was more or less reproduced in FE, yet minor inaccuracies caused that in GE the sign in bar 12 was given a form of an accent, while in EE in both bars it was printed one quaver too early.

b. 8

composition: Op. 10 No 11, Etude in E♭ major

 signs in A

 sign in FE (→EE)

No signs in GE

..

A includes two  marks, out of which only the 1st one was reproduced in FE (→EE). In GE there is however not a single one of them, which can indicate that even the one included in FE could have been initially overlooked and reintroduced by Chopin only during the last proofreading. In the main text we give both marks written in A, yet leaving the consideration of the second one, present only in the manuscript, at the performer's discretion.

Our suggestion

..

According to us, A presents the only reliable pedalling version of these bars and the following sections of the Etude. The versions included in the editions are probably a result of an error of FE, the attempt of its later correction by Chopin in the last proofing and the subsequent arbitrary additions by the revisers of GE and EE.

Long accent in A (→FE)

Short accent in GE

No mark in EE

..

In the main text we give the long accent written in A (→FE). In GE it was reproduced as a common short accent and in EE it was omitted.
