composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

The version of FE, when interpreted literally – d1-f1 as semibreves, including the upper one with a dot – is certainly erroneous. We assume, as it was interpreted in EE, that the notation determines the value of semibreve for the lower voice. This version could be considered to be a result of Chopin's proofreading, yet the engraver's error, who simply did not complete the work (a minim flag and a dot next to the lower note are missing), seems to be a more likely possibility. This is how this place was corrected in GE; we give this undoubtedly authentic version in the main text. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , Errors in FE , GE revisions , Rhythmic errors |

In A (→FE) the tie sustaining c2 is written only in bar 78 (in a new line of the text). This patent oversight was corrected in GE and EE. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in FE |

Shortening the length of the f1-a1 third and reduction of the number of voices are unjustified arbitrary changes of the engraver or reviser of GE3 (→GE4). category imprint: Differences between sources issues: GE revisions |

The value of minim, given to the bottom note of the c1-f1 fourth in FE (→GE,EE), is most probably erroneous. In the main text we give the written in A crotchet, which we however write with a separate stem in order to avoid ambiguity. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: Different values of chord components , Inaccuracies in FE |

The missing dot extending the c2 minim is, according to us, the composer's error. Chopin would often extend or separate some of the notes with additional stems or ties without taking care of the rhythmic values of these "voices" to fill the entire bar. However, in this case the rhythmic gap concerns the main melodic line, which was rather not intended, as Chopin embraced it with a slur. The mistake was corrected in GE2 (→GE3→GE4) and EE4. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , GE revisions , Rhythmic errors , Errors of A |
