b. 54-55

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

Tied a2 in A (→FEGE1,EE)

Tied a2, modern notation

Slur in GE2 (→GE3GE4)

..

The right ending of the tie sustaining a2 was arranged slightly too high in FE (→GE1). In GE2 (→GE3GE4) the tie was given an already totally erroneous form of a phrase mark combining a2 in bar 54 with d3 in bar 55. In the main text we give the only undoubtedly authentic version with sustained a2. We give the same version, written with a  repeated before a2 in bar 55 (earlier notation convention), as a separate variant, due to the not entirely determined sound of the penultimate chord in bar 55.

b. 57

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

No ties in A

Ties in FE (→GE,EE

..

Lack of the hold of the e1-e2 octave in A is most probably Chopin's mistake, corrected in FE (→GE,EE).

b. 57

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

Dotted minim in A (→FEGE) & EE4

Minim in EE3

Our suggestion

..

In the main text we separate the c2 note from the chord, as in this case Chopin's simplified notation may be unclear, e.g., considered to be erroneous, as it probably occurred in EE3.

b. 62

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

2 slurs & 2 ties in A

Slur in FE (→GE,EE

..

Lack of the ties sustaining the inner notes of the chord and the lower slur (a1-g1) is probably a result of the engraver's distraction (cf. bar 22). Apart from this one, in FE additional five indications of A were omitted – a triplet slur, wedge, accent,  and . It suggests a major lack of attention at the time of working on this bar.

b. 70

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

Semibreve d2 in A (→FEEE,GE1GE2)

Minim d2 in GE3 (→GE4)

..

It is hard to determine with certainty if placing d2 on one stem with the g1 minim in GE3 (→GE4) was an intentional action or a mistake.
