Fingering

b. 82-85

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

No fingering in A

Fingering in FE (→GE)

Fingering in EE

..

In the main text we give the fingering in bars 82-83, given by Chopin at the time of proofreading FE (→GE). It was completed – on the basis of authentic hints in similar places – by Fontana in EE. See also bar 83.

b. 83

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

No fingering in A

Fingering in FE (→GE)

EE, FED & FES

The fingering digit added over the 5th semiquaver ('1') in a proofreading of FE (→GE) is erroneous, which is revealed by comparison with analogous figures in bars 81 and 83. The conclusion is confirmed by corrections in FED and FES written with pencil. The correct digit '2' is also in EE.

Our variant suggestion

..

It is hard to determine whether the change of the fingering digit '1', which occurred between A and FE (→GE), is a result of Chopin's correction or the engraver's error. Both fingering solutions are natural and comfortable, hence we include both in the main text, with affinity toward the undoubtedly authentic fingering of A. It is the fingering of EE that draws attention, in which Fontana changed the indication included in FE to the one Chopin wrote in A.

b. 89

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

Numeral '1' in A

No fingering in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The omission of the fingering digit in FE (→GE,EE) is probably an accident. Cf. the note on the rhythmic error.

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

Fingering in A (→FEGE)

The fingering given in EE at the beginning of the 2nd half of the bar is certainly erroneous (most probably the engraver mistakenly repeated here the set of digits from the previous group of semiquavers).
