b. 14

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

Fingering in A

Fingering in FE (→GE,EE)

Fingering written into FED

Our variant suggestion

Our alternative suggestion

..

The sources reveal Chopin's hesitation concerning the fingering in this bar. According to the indications in A and FED, the fingering order for the 1st group of semiquavers is 5215, while FE (→GE,EE) gives 5125. However, neither A nor FED determines the fingering of the two following semiquaver groups – it can be both 4215 and 4125. In the main text we adopt a variant solution, in which we collate the digits featured in the sources. Additionally, we suggest a notation including all fingering possibilities stemming from various interpretations of these source notations which do not determine the fingering in the 2nd and 3rd groups of semiquavers.

Fingering in A

FE (→GE,EE)

..

The fingering of the L.H. was added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE (→GE,EE) – only the 1st finger over in bar 16 is written in A.

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

No fingering in A (→FEGE)

Fingering in EE

..

The indications added by Fontana in EE describe the same fingering that Chopin indicated in bars 1-9. What is interesting is the fact that Fontana did not faithfully copy the indications from these bars, yet he performed a new edition, in which generally – yet not always – there are fewer digits than for the first time.

Pedalling in FE (→GE,EE)

..

In A the only indication concerning the pedalling is the  mark at the beginning of bar 15. The remaining indications were added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE (→GE,EE).
