b. 67-69

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

No fingering in A

Fingering in FE (→GE)

..

In the main text we give the fingering added by Chopin in bars 67-68 in a proofreading of FE (→GE,EE). Fontana completed it in EE both in these bars and in the next one. The additions define the fingering according to Chopin.

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

No pedalling in A

Pedalling in FE (→GE,EE)

..

Chopin added the pedalling in a proofreading of FE (→GE,EE). It is not clear whether it is meant to indicate a slightly different performance than in bars 8-10 and 22-24, where there are no indications, or whether Chopin marked the pedalling, which he considered to be obvious from the beginning, only here.

b. 68-70

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

Slurs in A, contextual interpretation

No slurs in FE (→GE,EE3)

Slurs in EE4

..

The lack of slurs in FE (→GE,EE3) is certainly an engraver's oversight. Slurs in A, although imprecise, rise no doubts as to their intentional compass. This is further confirmed by Chopin's correction of a sketchy slur in bar 69 in A, precising its scope. Slurs in EE4, generally consistent with A, are nevertheless an undoubted editorial revision.

b. 69-70

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

No marks in A (→FEGE,EE)

Our suggestion

..

In the main text we suggest to add the staccato dots, omitted in the sources, after analogous bars 9-10.

b. 71-72

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

 in A (→FEGE1)

  in EE & GE2 (→GE3GE4)

Our suggestion

..

In bar 71 the missing  mark after  is not striking in A, in which the pedalling is not precisely indicated. However, in FE (→GE,EE) Chopin added indications in adjacent bars, hence in the main text we suggest the moment of the pedal's release (change) in accordance with the harmonic flow. In EE and GE2 (→GE3GE4), the  mark was added earlier, at the end of bar 71.
