b. 37

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

Slur in A

Slurs in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The first R.H. slur in A is probably drawn imprecisely. The distinctly different slurs in FE (→GE,EE) are most likely the result of Chopin's correction.

b. 38-40

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

..

We add a cautionary  before b3 in bar 38 and naturals before e1 in the middle of bar 39 and at the beginning of bar 40. The 1st of them was already added in GE, the 2nd – in GE3 (→GE4).

b. 38-39

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

Two staccato dots in A

One dot in FE (→GE1,EE)

No marks in GE2 (→GE3GE4)

..

In FE (→GE,EE) the staccato dot at the beginning of bar 38 was overlooked. In GE2 (→GE3GE4) the dot in bar 39 (as well as in bar 40) was also omitted.

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

 & marcato in A

..

We give both indications after A. The shifts performed in FE were probably forced by lack of space under the bottom stave. The notation was subject to further non-authentic reinterpretations in GE and EE.

Slur & wedge in A

Staccato dot in FE (→GE1,EE)

No signs in GE2 (→GE3GE4)

..

It is hard to determine whether the omission of the additional slur visible in A was intentional. Similarly, the status of replacing the wedge with a staccato dot is also uncertain. In the main text we adopt the version of FE (→GE1,EE), which is compliant with the notation of bars 37-38 and was potentially accepted by Chopin at the time of proofreading FE. In GE2 (→GE3GE4) the dot was omitted.
