b. 37

composition: WN 17, Polonaise in B♭ major

13 semiquavers in JC

11 semiquavers in EF

13 semiquavers in PE, literal reading

13 semiquavers in PE, probable interpretation

..

The source discrepancies observed in the notation of the semiquaver group are not easily explicable and interpretable. Out of a number of possibilities, for the main text we adopt a solution which is maximally close to the version of the base source (PE), in which we change an element of auxiliary character, which does not influence significantly the graphic image of notation, at the same time clearly incompatible with this image (the number 11 over the group of 13 notes).

No signs in JC & PE

Our variant suggestion

..

Lack of dynamic indications in PE may be attributed to a drop in attention span at the time of writing the bar introducing the repetition, not written out. One may confirm or suspect signs of distraction in a few different details of notation, cf. the remarks concerning the R.H. and the beginning and end of the bar in the part of the L.H. Due to this fact, we propose the signs appearing in analogous bars 10 and 18, as well as in EF.

Lack of the ornament in JC may be a result of the copyist's distraction or of Chopin's himself (cf. the note concerning bar 37). The difference between EF and PE – see the note related to bars 10-11.

In the main text we give the dynamic hairpins after PE (the bar is already marked as repetition of bar 11 – Dal Segno). The signs of EF only slightly differ in their range in comparison with them, while JC is devoid of any markings.

PE, interpretation

..

In the previous sources, a similar version to the version of analogous bar 11 (JC) or the same one (EF) is written out. In the main text we give the clearly different version of PE, repeated from bar 11 (bar 38 is the first one out of the ones marked as Dal Segno).

In JC, it is the deletion of the note on the 3rd beat of the bar that draws our attention, made in a way known from Chopin's corrections in pupils' copies.
