Quavers in JC & EF

Dotted rhythm in PE

..

On the 3rd beat of the bar, we give the dotted rhythm after PE, based on the later autograph – [A].

b. 36

composition: WN 17, Polonaise in B♭ major

..

In JC and in EF, there is a cautionary  before the last a1. This unjustified in this context sign was repeated in [AI] most probably on the basis of bar 9. The sign is absent in PE. Cf. bar 37.

Wedge and slurred dots in PE

..

The articulation markings on the 1st and 2nd beats of both bars come from PE. Cf. bars 8-10. A combination of a wedge and the following it dots under a slur is often to be found in Chopin's works, e.g., in the Nocturne in D major, Op. 27 No. 2, bars 39-40.

Our suggestion

..

The dynamic indications visible in EF are a continuation of  hairpins in bar 35. According to us, it is highly unlikely that they were authentic in this form, although  dynamics for the returning theme seems to be accurate. In the remaining sources there are no indications in this bar. The appearance of the main thematic thought without indicating the manner of its performance assumes an interpretation which would correspond to the indications given during its previous occurrences (bars 8-9 and 16-17). Taking this into account, we suggest  (in brackets) to be more appropriate than  ending the previous phrase in bar 35.

Crotchet in JC (interpretation) & EF

Crotchet f-e1 in PE

..

The notation of JC is inaccurate: lack of extension of the rhythmic value of the quaver despite the tie holding it until the next bar. In EF, the notation was improved, yet it is only the notation of PE, based on the later autograph, that describes precisely the performance of this place intended by Chopin.
