GE1 - First German edition

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: XI 1840
Title: 3ème Scherzo
Dedication: Monsieur Adolphe Gutmann

GE1 is based on GC. The base text was subjected to a thorough revision; as a result, a number of errors were corrected but also many arbitrary changes and additions made. Nothing points to Chopin's participation in the preparation of GE1. Here are some examples of changes introduced in that edition:

  • corrections of errors of the base text, for example changes of pitch in bars 16100294345, rhythm in bar  330, adding naturals in bars 506 and 508;
  • repeating in the L.H. of slurs and other markings of the R.H., e.g. slurs in bars 1-12, 17-18, 159-187;
  • other revisions, such as adding cautionary accidentals: sharps in bars 29, 45 & analog.,  in bar 274, adding ties for g in bars 34-35d in bars 288-289, adding rests in bar 64, a double bar line in bars 154-155.

From among the changes listed in the third group, those in bars 34-35, 64, 154-155 are the effect of intentional actions resulting in inauthentic text. If the editor could have counted on Chopin's proofing of the text, he would have probably consulted such changes with the composer. Another argument that speaks against Chopin's participation in preparing GE1 is lack of not-so-obvious corrections that could be ascribed to the composer and that are so characteristic for the sources reviewed by Chopin.

GE1 also has a number of its own errors made in the text, such as mistaken reading of the note in bar 120, omission of staccato dots in bars 259 and 267, redundant dashes after diminuendo in bar 276, missing  in bar 304, missing  in bar 479.

There are copies of GE1 differing in price given on the cover.

Pencil annotations visible in the presented copy (mainly fingering) have no source value.
