GE2 - Second German edition

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: (1860-1870) (?)
Title: 3ème Scherzo
Dedication: Monsieur Adolphe Gutmann

There are no clear indications for determining the date when GE2 was prepared. However, in many other Chopin's compositions corrected editions of Breitkopf & Härtel were published in the 1860s, so we could risk a statement that this was the case also with GE2.

The most important of the introduced changes was undoubtedly the unifying ot the rhythms in bars 31, 47 & analog. That change could have been suggested by a comparison of the version of GC with the text of FE, sure to have been taken into consideration when making alerations. Other corrections derived from FE include  in bar 6, a R.H. crotchet at the end of bar 64 and 406, the note b in the last chord of bar 210. Also, the replacement of e3 with g3 in bar 591 may be treated as made under the influence of FE.

Other changes include the correction of the error in bar 59, supplementing the allegedly missing  rests in bar 90 and staccato dots in the L.H. in bars 129-130, as well as supplementing of pedal marks in bar 556 and in bar 601, also resulting from re-reading of GC

Copies of GE2 contain a number of flaws indicating worn printing plates or connected with the use of lithographic printing method, e.g. a c2 in bar 350 is missing in the 1st chord, and in bar 377 a trace of once-removed accent can be seen.

There is an impression, dating back to the years 1872-73, with the price in marks on the cover, as well as its variation containing an additional printed identification of the publisher at the bottom of the first page of the musical text. In the copies of those impressions available to NE publishers the printing flaws described above are not visible.
