b. 210

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

g1 in EE

a1 in GC (→GE) & FE

..

It is difficult for us to tell how the version of EE came about. It cannot be entirely ruled out that it resulted from misreading the manuscript, yet it is much more probable that it was the authentic, perhaps earlier, version. For our main text we take the consistent and indubitable version of GC (→GE) and FE.

b. 217

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

..

FE1 does not have  for the topmost note of the chord in the L.H. That obvious omission was corrected in FE2.

b. 236-238

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

..

The sources have the lower notes of the L.H. octaves in bars 236-238 marked with the digits 8. We change that notation to match contemporary standards. The same applies to bars 192-199, 239-240 and 486-493.

b. 239-240

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

in bar 239 in EE & GC (→GE)

8 in bars 239-240 in FE

Version of FE, unabbreviated notation

..

In EE and GC (→GE) the lower note of the L.H. octave, D, is written – as – only in bar 239. That notation, when read literally, means the absence of both the tie and the tied note in bar 240. In FE, sustaining of the entire octave is written, also by means of an abbreviation, is a doubtless manner.

b. 241

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

B1 in EE, GC (→GE) & FE

B2-B1 proposed by the editors

..

Lacking in the sources is the bottom note of the L.H. octave, B2. As the scale of Chopin's piano only reached down to C1, the addition seems more than justified. Cf. bar 491.
