GE2 - Second German edition

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: VIII 1863
Title: Mazurkas || No. 4.
Dedication: Monsieur le Comte de Perthuis

The second German edition was prepared in two versions: as a volume containing the entire Opus 24, and as four separate Mazurkas published individually.

GE2 resulted from a thorough and meticulous, albeit not always apt, revision of the text of the Mazurka. The introduced additions and changes are mostly based on a new reading of A (e.g. slurs in bars 57 and 91-92, hairpins, accents, also pedal asterisks). Some elements were supplemented on the basis of the comparison with similar places in the text (staccato dots,  accents, dynamics). Prevailing among arbitrary changes are revisions that try to adjust Chopin's notation to prevailing conventions, e.g. shortening of the slur in bars 7-8, doubling the slur in the unisono L.H. part in bars  53-56, or adding tiny slurs slurring grace notes to their main notes throughout the entire Mazurka. Also, slurs forming part of triplet marking were removed (e.g. in bar 44) and many cautionary accidentals were added (see for instance bars 101-111).

We present this Mazurka in the version published separately. Due to the fact that an individual title page was replaced with a collective list of Chopin's Mazurkas, there is no dedication in that version of GE2. Pencil additions that can be seen in the presented copy have no source value.
