In A, the phrase is covered with a single slur (up to the 2nd beat of bar 14); this version is correctly reproduced in GE2 (→GE3). Meanwhile, in GE1 the notation is ambiguous, as the slur in the line-ending bar 13 reaches the last quaver only. The in A certainly applies to the 3rd beat of bar 18. Despite that, in GE1 (→FE→EE) it was placed at the beginning of bar 19, according to a rather mechanically applied rule that markings of that type should be placed in advance. The whole-bar pedalling of A was omitted in GE1 (and restored back in GE2 and GE3 in accordance with A). When proofing FE Chopin restored pedalling in that bar, yet he placed the asterisk earlier than in A, before the 3rd beat of the bar. We consider this to be his final decision. In the main text we give the pedalling of A and #Wn2 (→GE3). In GE1, the pedal up marking was placed under the 3rd crotchet of the bar, against the notation of A but in line with the tendency to adjust all the elements of the notation to rhythmic structures. In FE (→EE1→EE2) the pedalling was omitted. The missing pedal markings were supplemented in EE3 in the version consistent with A.
