b. 151-152

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

Slur in A, literal reading

Slur in A (contextual interpretationGEEE,IE)

Slur in FE

..

The ending of the A slur in bar 153 must be inaccurate. To the main text we adopt the GE interpretation thereof (→EE,IE). The later starting point of the slur in FE is most probably a mistake by the engraver. This slur, together with the one in bar 150, undoubtedly means that the entire quaver sequence should be performed continuously legato, as in similar contexts the division of slurs falling on strong beats was often considered irrelevant.

c in A

c in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

The GE version (→FE,EE,IE) is most probably due to a mistake by the engraver, who either misinterpreted the narrow (most probably added later)  in A or simply confused the accidentals while engraving.

b. 152-153

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

..

In A Chopin omitted a few necessary accidentals – in bar 152 the flats to g2 at the beginning of the bar, to D and to c3, while in bar 153 the  to g1 and the  to A. All of them were added in GE (→FE,EE,IE).

d2 in sources

d2 suggested by the editors

..

Harmonic reasons – a B minor chord is a more natural introduction to the key of F minor in the next bar than its major counterpart – provide an argument for the omission of the  to the top note of the chord at the beginning of the bar (d2, and not d2). This conclusion is confirmed by analogies with similar phrases – cf. bar 161 and 99.

Slur from B1 in A

Slur from B in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

Neither the range nor the shape of the A slur suggest that it should start from the 1st quaver in the bar, as it was reproduced by GE (→FE,EE,IE). We retain the notation of A in the main text.
