b. 11

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

Slur in A, literal reading

Slur in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

When interpreted literally, the A slur is musically unjustified – it is almost certain that the slur should start earlier, yet Chopin wanted to avoid a clash with the already existing elements of notation, that is the bottom voice minim and the natural to e2. Similar inaccuracies occur in this movement on a number of occasions – cf. the note on bars 17-20. The end of the slur is also uncertain – we consider the interpretation adopted to GE (→FE,EE,IE) to be most accurate and suggest it as the main text.

In EE1 the quaver beam starts from the second note and ends on the fifth one. The mistake was rectified in EE2.

Long accent in A (→GEFE,EE)

in IE

..

The extended  mark in IE was an arbitrary decision of this edition. Consequently, unlike in the other editions, the mark can no longer be considered a long accent, which, according to us, was intended by Chopin.

In A one can see that the  to a was being removed. Chopin entered it probably under the influence of the preceding bars, in which he had to write flats to the a1 notes.

from 2nd chord in A

The apparently minor inaccuracy in the reproduction of the  hairpin in GE (→FE,EE,IE) is however typical for engravers' modus operandi – the mark was extended to adjust it, more or less, to an easily perceptible rhythmic structure, which in this case is the bar.
