Fingering in EE

..

In the main text we omit the inauthentic L.H. fingering added by EE in bar 17 and 21.

b. 17-20

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

..

The beginnings of the L.H. slurs fall on the 1st or the 2nd note of the half-bar figures. It must be an inaccuracy caused by the presence of the minims prolonging the 1st quaver of each figure. Chopin tried to avoid a clash of the slur with the note, which, considering quick pen movements, made the beginning of the slur occur already under the 2nd quaver. It was already GE that assessed this situation in this way (→FE,EE,IE).

b. 17

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

Slur in A (→GEEE,IE)

No slur in FE

..

The lack of a slur in FE is most likely an oversight on the part of the engraver.

b. 18

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

No slur in A (→GEFE,EE,IE)

Slur suggested by the editors

..

In the main text we suggest here a slur modelled after the preceding bar, since there is no doubt that in this context both motifs should be performed analogously.

#FE2 also added a slur.
