b. 261

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Long accent in A (→GE)

Short accent in FE (→EE)

, our alternative suggestion

 & , our complementing suggestion

..

Noteworthy is the similarity, despite the inaccurate reproduction of the accent, of versions of A and FE – cf. the other three analogous places where these sources differ significantly (bars 94, 98 and 265). This may mean, among other things, that this place was accidentally omitted in Chopin’s additions or corrections to the markings in [FC] or the proofs of FE1. Taking account of this possibility, we propose – as an alternative or supplement to the main text, based on the version of A – a  hairpin modelled on the indications of FE in three previous analogous places – see bars 93-97.

b. 262-266

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Staccato dot in b. 266 in A (→GE)

No marks in FE (→EE)

Dots in b. 262 & 266 suggested by the editors

..

In the main text we suggest adding a staccato dot in bar 262, as this is the only one among the four crotchets in analogous bars (bar 95, 99 and 266) that Chopin did not provide with a dot in A. In FE (→EE) dots are absent in all the above bars.

b. 264-265

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

till bar 265 in A

in b. 264 in GE

 in FE (→EE)

..

The shorter  marking in GE must have been an arbitrary decision by the engraver, who adjusted the sign to the bar. By contrast, the FE hairpin, of the same range as in GE, can be coming from Chopin, who would add some performance markings twice – both to A after [FC] had been finished, and to [FC] or proofs of FE1. This is also supported by the presence of a  hairpin in FE at the beginning of bar 265 – with longer  hairpin this sign would be contradictory.
As in analogous bars 94 and 98, the  in FE, certainly authentic, can be considered an alternative or an addition to the accent on e2-e3 written in A – see note to bar 265.

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Long accent in A & GE2

No mark in FE (→EE) & GE1

The lack of accent in GE1 is an oversight by the engraver, corrected in GE2.

b. 276

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Staccato dots in A & GE2

L.H. dot in GE1

No marks in FE (→EE)

..

Unlike the first time (bar 109), in A Chopin provided the 1st crotchet in the bar with staccato dots. The marks were probably added to A after [FC] had been finished, perhaps together with the deletion of the slur reaching the R.H. chord. The missing R.H. dot in GE1 is an oversight, corrected in GE2.
