Issues : Omission of current key accidentals

b. 19-23

composition: Op. 28 No. 21, Prelude in B♭ major

..

In A Chopin overlooked a few necessary flats in the R.H. part: in b. 19 d2, in b. 21 d3 and g2, in b. 22 d2 and d3. FC added only the first  in b. 21; in addition, the copyist overlooked the  of g2 in b. 23. FE also added only some of the necessary flats, next to d2(3) in b. 21-22, and – which is puzzling – also overlooked the  of g2 in b. 23. GE and EE added all necessary accidentals.

b. 19

composition: Op. 28 No. 17, Prelude in A♭ major

f1 in FCI

f1 in A (→FCGE, →FEEE)

..

In the version prepared for print, the top note of the chord on the 5th quaver in the bar, interpreted literally, is an f1, since it is not accompanied by a relevant accidental in this bar. The following arguments prove that it was almost certainly Chopin's mistake:

  •  put before that note in FCI, confirming the authenticity of the version with f1,
  • presence of e1 (played with the L.H.) in that chord,  which, together with f1, would result in an unpleasant cluster – cf. b. 21, in which Chopin avoided a similar cluster by omitting g1.

composition: Op. 28 No. 22, Prelude in G minor

A (→FE,FCGE) has no  lowering a1 to a1. The obvious inaccuracy was spotted only in EE.

b. 20

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

d-a-c1 in CLI (interpretation)

c-a-b in Ap

d-a-b in FE (→GE,EE

..

In the sources there are three enharmonically different forms of this chord. Two of them are inaccurately written: in CLI there are no flats lowering d to d and a to a and in FE there is no  lowering d to d (which was corrected both in GE and EE). In the main text we give the notation adopted by Chopin in the version for publication. Cf. bar 22.

composition: Op. 10 No 6, Etude in E♭ minor

In A (→FEGE1GE2,→EE2EE3) there is no  raising G to G. This patent accuracy was corrected in FES and later editions.

In the sources the natural raising g to g is before the first sustained semiquaver in the bar. We move it before the 4th note, according to General Editorial Principlesp. 3.
