b. 3

composition: Op. 10 No 6, Etude in E♭ minor

No fingering in A

Fingering in FE (→GE,EE)

Fingering written into FES, interpretation

Our variant suggestion

..

The fingering in the L.H. was added by Chopin during a proofreading of FE (→GE,EE). Chopin suggests here a different, slightly more demanding finger arrangement than at the beginning of the piece.
Probably it turned out to be too difficult for Jane Stirling, as in her pupil's copy (FES) digits suggesting use of a more convenient fingering were added. According to us, the entry, despite including only two digits, changes the fingering in the entire bar (perhaps this is what the sharp over the fingering reminds of?), which we also suggests in the main text in the variant form.

b. 12

composition: Op. 10 No 6, Etude in E♭ minor

No sign in A (→FEGE,EE)

Possible reading of FEJ

..

The meaning of the mark (marks?) visible in FEJ is uncertain. The mark over eat the end of the bar may be a fingering digit.

b. 17

composition: Op. 10 No 6, Etude in E♭ minor

No fingering in A

'4' in FE (→GE)

'3' in EE & FES

..

In FE (→GE) the lower digit of the last triad's fingering in the R.H. (4) seems to be erroneous, which is proved by a correction performed by Chopin in this place in FES. A similar change was introduced by Fontana in EE.

b. 18

composition: Op. 10 No 6, Etude in E♭ minor

..

In A (→FEGE1GE2GE3GE4) there is no  raising c1 to c1 in the chord at the beginning of the bar, which must be an error. Chopin added the necessary sign in FED (as well as the second one "on the run", unnecessary before in the 2nd half of the bar). The correct text is included also in EE and GE5.

b. 18-19

composition: Op. 10 No 6, Etude in E♭ minor

..

In A (→FE) Chopin omitted the naturals raising B1 to B1C to C and c to c. The second of them was added in FES. In GE was added at the end of bar 18, yet both signs in bar 19 appeared only in GE3 (→GE4GE5). EE has the correct text.
