Issues : Inaccurate slurs in A

b. 6-7

composition: Op. 28 No. 21, Prelude in B♭ major

..

In A the end of the L.H. slur in b. 6, which closes the line, clearly points to continuation, which is, however, absent in b. 7. In this case, it did not result in discrepancies in the remaining sources, since both FE (→EE) and FC (→GE) led the slur to the beginning of b. 7, undoubtedly in accordance with Chopin's intention.

Slur from e1 in Atut, literal reading

Slur from g1 in Atut, interpretation suggested by the editors

No slur in FE (→EE)

Slur in bar 8 in GE

..

In Atut, it is unclear from which note the slur begins. When interpreted literally, it seems to be encompassing three notes, from the esemiquaver. However, according to us, the shape of the line suggests that Chopin started writing it earlier, yet the ink did not flow out immediately. From the musical point of view, it would be a slur beginning already from the cquaver that would be most natural; however, reluctant to excessively intervene in the graphic image of music, in the main text we suggest a slur from the note that directly precedes its visible ending.
The missing slur in FE (→EE) is most probably a result of the engraver's oversight. In GE, a slur was added after the authentic slur in the L.H.

Triplet slur in A1

Whole-bar slur in CJ

Half-bar slur in CK (probable interpretation→CB)

No slur in EL

..

The significant difference between the slurs of CJ and CK suggests that one of them is probably inaccurate (or both). In the main text we adopt the slur of CJ, which is a natural continuation of the slur in b. 5-6. In our interpretation, the slur of CK encompasses the entire 2nd half of the bar.

Continuous slur in A, contextual interpretation

Separate slurs in FC (→GE) & FE (→EE)

..

Bar 7 is marked in A (→FC) in an abridged manner as repetition of b. 6. It brings into question the slurring, since the slur over b. 8 begins in A before the end of b. 7, which suggests that it should be combined with the preceding slur, which, in fact, is not written out. In FE (→EE) the slurs are not combined; however, since both the range and the shape of the slur in b. 8 suggest that it should be continued, in the main text we encompass these bars with a continuous slur. The slur of FC, although generally very similar to the slur of A, does not imply continuation, hence the motif in b. 8 in GE is encompassed with a separate slur.

A more probable interpretation of the slur of A

GE (→FEEE)

..

A carelessly drawn slur in A was interpreted in GE (→FEEE) as applying only to a group of small notes. In our opinion, it is more probable that Chopin intended a longer slur here.
