Issues : Inaccurate slurs in A

b. 6-7

composition: Op. 24 No. 3, Mazurka in A♭ major

..

In A (→GEFEEE) the slurs begins from a flat1 in bar 6 and we rely on that logical notation in our main text. In AI the beginning of that slur is unclear  - the beginning is bar 6 is missing.

Slurs in A

Our suggestion

..

The slurs of A in these bars are inaccurate, which was only partially corrected in FE (→GE1). The ambiguity was eliminated in EE and – in a different way – in subsequent GE,s, yet Chopin did not participate in their elaboration. Taking into account analogous bars 14-15, in which Chopin probably corrected the slur, and 38-39, in which he combined the slurs in A, in the main text we suggest a continuous slur from the 2nd quaver in bar 6 to the middle of bar 8.

Slur in AI

Slurs in A, interpretation

Slur in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The range and meaning of the slurs of A is not entirely clear. In the main text we give the graphically and musically unambiguous slur of FE (→GE,EE), which is probably a result of Chopin's proofreading. The short slur of AI is probably fragmented (cf. bars 2-4).

Slur to f2 in A (literal reading→GE1FE)

Slur up to e2 in A, contextual interpretation

Slurs in both hands in EE & GE2

..

The slur of A, although unfinished in bar 7 on a new page, clearly leads to the crotchet at the beginning of the bar, which was not reproduced in the editions. The slur of the L.H., added in EE and GE2, is certainly inauthentic.

Slur to in sources

Slur to g suggested by the editors

..

In the sources the slur reaches only the last semiquaver in b. 6. A comparison with analogous situations in b. 2-3, 10-11 and 14-15 proves that it is almost certainly a result of inaccuracy of A.
