funèbre in GC (→GE), FE1 (→FE2EE) & FE5

No designation in FE3 (→FE4)

..

The fact of removing the programme indication of Marche's character in the proofreading of FE3 (→FE4) can be certainly ascribed to Chopin. The composer replaced it with a neutral tempo indication, Lento. The original indication funèbre was restored, for understandable reasons, in FE5 – the edition was prepared shortly after Chopin's funeral.

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt III

No indication in GC (→GE) & FE1 (→FE2EE1)

Lento in FE3 (→FE4,FE5) & EE2

..

The indication Lento was added by Chopin in the proofreading of FE3 (→FE4,FE5), as if instead the simultaneously removed funèbre. It was repeated – most probably on the basis of FE4 – also in EE2.

simplice ma graziosamente in A (→GE)

simplice ma grazioso in EE

..

The use of the adverb suffix -mente was characteristic for pieces of young Chopin. In the main text, we include the proofreading – probably by Chopin – in FE (→EE). In EE, in addition, the older, obsolete form simplice was replaced with its contemporary counterpart semplice.

Metronome marking in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The missing metronome marking in Atut proves that Chopin added it in a proofreading of FE (→GE,EE).

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

In A, the pesante marking is written high on the top stave, while its beginning falls over the slur. Such a placement prompted the engraver of FE to put it over the top stave; however, in the stage of proofreading FE1, the indication was moved – probably at Chopin's request – to between the staves, directly over the R.H. part.
