No markings in A

 in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

[  ] suggested by the editors

..

Chopin stopped writing pedal marks probably due to distraction – in analogous bars 124-125 both bars include a full set of    marks, while the  mark in bar 140 is the last sign on this page of the manuscript (which ends on bar 142). Taking into account the above, in the main text we suggest supplementing the marks. The  mark in bar 140 was added already by GE (→FE,EE,IE).

b. 140

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

Slur to 7th quaver in A (→GEEE,IE)

Slur to 8th quaver in FE

..

The longer FE slur is most probably due to the engraver's inaccuracy.

In A e and a in the L.H. and e1 and a2 in the R.H., the pitch of which is unquestionable due to the harmonic context, are devoid of the necessary accidentals. All the omitted naturals were added in GE (→FE,EE,IE).

Wedge in FE

Staccato dot in GE & EE

..

The change of wedges to staccato dots in GE resulted from general revision of this publisher – see the note in bar 7. On the other hand, the dot in EE, in which the wedges printed in FE were generally preserved, was most probably introduced to standardise the L.H. marks in this and the preceding bar. The changes rather cannot be authentic, hence in the main text we keep the FE wedge.
