Issues : Cautionary accidentals

b. 21-29

composition: Op. 28 No. 22, Prelude in G minor

..

In the 2nd half of b. 21, A (→FC) places an unjustified  before d2, but omits a  raising f1 to f1. Equally in b. 29 which in the manuscripts is only marked as a repetition of b. 21. The overlooked  was added in all editions except FE in b. 29. In both bars EE removed the unnecessary , we include this revision in the main text.

b. 22

composition: WN 17, Polonaise in B♭ major

..

JC has a cautionary  before the 4th semiquaver, a1. In the light of the currently binding rules, a sign in this position is superfluous.

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

In CLI the 10th semiquaver is written as an a2, which constitutes a natural cause of changes in the notation of the accidentals appearing in the further part of the bar. Lack of the  returning g2 on the penultimate semiquaver is, however, a patent error. In the majority of sources there is a reminding (?)  before the last note in the bar – only Ap and GE4 (→GE5) omit this rather unnecessary sign.

b. 22

composition: Op. 50 No. 1, Mazurka in G major

..

There is a cautionary  before f1 at the beginning of the bar in A1 (→FE). The unjustified mark was removed in EE; it is also absent in GE.

composition: Op. 28 No. 8, Prelude in F♯ minor

The  (cautionary?) present in all sources before d1 in the 3rd L.H. figure is almost certainly a remaining part of the initial notation of the quavers in the 1st half of the bar, which were written down as d1. After the notation had been changed, the  was no more necessary, hence we omit it in the main text. In the same 3rd L.H. figure, one can see in A a crossed-out  before c2. The accidental is not necessary, yet, due to c3 in the R.H., we give it in the main text. It was most probably for the same reason that it was also added in FE2 (→EE), also in the 4th figure. EE repeated in the 4th figure also the  before d1.
